Jesus Is the Christ: A Halfway Healing and a Halfway Confession

In Mark 8:22–26, we see Jesus heal a blind man at Bethsaida. Interestingly, Jesus doesn’t completely heal him all at once. Instead, Jesus heals him in stages. Recall the story:

And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”

Jesus lays his hands on the man the first time and only halfway heals. Only after this first stage of healing does Jesus then fully heal the man. What gives? Why does this miracle play out in this way? Is this just a harder case? Or, is it a problem with Jesus’ power—was Jesus just not quite feeling it that day? Well, I think we can eliminate those options. In fact, it might be helpful to first point out what is not happening here based on what Mark has revealed about Jesus.

 

Not a Harder Case

This is not just a harder case. Mark has shown Jesus to have absolute authority and power over demons, disease, nature, and even sin and death (Mark 1:25–26, 34, 40–42; 2:5, 8–12; 3:1–6; 4:35–41; 5:1–20, 21–43; 6:30–52; etc.). In fact, every miracle up to this point that Jesus has performed has been instantaneous. No matter how you rank the difficulty level of these cases here—of course, sin and death are the obvious choices of “most difficult” though, but you knew that—none have stood up to Jesus’ authority. Therefore, we can eliminate the notion that this is just a harder case.

 

Not a Problem with Power

This does not indicate a problem with Jesus’ power. Mark has made clear at the outset that Jesus is the Son of God.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. (Mark 1:1)

The same logic we applied above to the first question (Is this a harder case?) applies here as well. Jesus has indicated by his actions that he operates with divine authority. Demons, disease, nature, and death all bend to his will. Jesus himself reveals by his self-proclaimed title the Son of Man that he is the one who receives all authority and dominion straight from God, the Ancient of Days himself (Mark 2:10; 28; cf. Daniel 7:13–14). This two-stage healing, then, does not point to a problem with Jesus’ power.

 

A Problem with Faith

So it is not a more difficult case and Jesus is not having a problem with power here. In fact, Jesus has shown nothing but absolute authority and control up to this point. So based on this, what is going on? Well, the logical conclusion is that Jesus, who has all power and all divine authority, must be in control here as well. That is, he must be doing this on purpose. Why? Because there is a problem present here. The problem is faith.

This faith problem is not Jesus’, and it is not the blind man’s. The faith problem is the disciples’ faith problem. Unlike most of us, Jesus is an extraordinary multi-tasker. Here, Jesus is not just compassionately addressing the issue of this man’s blindness, he is also compassionately addressing the issue of his disciples’ lack of faith in him. In fact, just a few verses before Jesus rebukes the disciples for unbelief and asks

Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear?… (Mark 8:18)

The point is driven home even further by the fact that right before saying this, Jesus healed a deaf and mute man (Mark 7:31–37). That point is this: the disciples are spiritually like this blind man. They see Jesus, but not clearly, not fully. They don’t fully grasp who he is and what he has come to do. They don’t fully believe in him for who he is…yet. Peter illustrates this spiritual reality in the very next scene.

 

A Confession and A Rebuke

Immediately on the heels of this miracle, Jesus poses the question of the ages to his disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29). Peter, ever eager, gives an answer that proves to be the confession of the ages: “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:29). Peter at the very least believes that Jesus is the promised son of David who would restore the kingdom of Israel, rout their enemies, and reign on the throne as king in justice and righteousness (2 Samuel 7:12–13; Isaiah 9:6–7). He might even have a sense of this king’s special nature in that in some way he would be considered God’s son (2 Samuel 7:14; 1 Chronicles 17:13). And he might have a sense that his reign, his kingdom would endure forever in some way shape or form (2 Samuel 7:13; Chronicles 17:12, 14). Perhaps he believes his throne would endure forever through an unbreakable line of kings that followed. Regardless of the full extent of Peter’s knowledge here, Peter knows the promise of the coming Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed, a son of David who would restore God’s kingdom and be king. And Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ. But in what follows, it becomes clear that Peter gives a halfway confession. That is, Peter does not fully know the way the Christ will restore the kingdom. He only sees partially in that he does not understand the messianic mission. There is more to this confession than Peter knows.

After Peter’s confession, Jesus begins to teach them the path he, the Son of Man, the Christ, must take to the throne. And power in any earthly sense does not mark this path. Pain marks this path.

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. (Mark 8:31)

This does not fit into Peter’s category for the Christ. So he immediately takes Jesus aside and begins to rebuke him. This earns him nothing but an even fiercer rebuke from Jesus.

He [Jesus] rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Peter only halfway sees who Jesus is as the Christ and what Jesus will do as the Christ. Peter does not fully see that the Messiah has come to destroy sin and Satan, not earthly enemies (1 John 3:8). And Peter does not fully see the way that the Christ will do it—through suffering. The Christ is the suffering servant of Isaiah 53.

 

The Christ Suffers in order to Save

Jesus makes clear that you cannot confess him as the Christ who saves without confessing him as the Christ who suffers in order to save. Jesus the Christ “was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5). “Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him” (Isaiah 53:10). Because, as the perfectly righteous one, he will “make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities” (Isaiah 53:11). Jesus the Christ, “bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12).

Peter’s ignorance and partial spiritual eyesight is on full display here. But the Christ would not leave him in his partial blindness and halfway confession. Indeed, it is the very path Peter disagrees with, that ends up saving him and restoring his sight. Because the Christ suffered, was rejected, was killed, and rose, Peter’s “sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.” Jesus heals Peter’s half sight so he that he no longer holds to a half confession. There is no confessing Christ without confessing the suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection of the Christ. Don’t take my word for it, take Peter’s.

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it…Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Jesus is the Christ. And he is the Christ who suffers in order to save his people. Like Peter and the rest of the disciples, we were spiritual blind, but the Christ has come in order to restore our sight. And while our battle with this sinful flesh will often blur our vision again, the promise of the Christ is that through his suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection, he will save us. He will restore our sight fully, and we will behold the son of David, the Son of God, reign forever over God’s kingdom that never ends. And our lips will utter this confession in all it fullness: Jesus is the Christ.

An Extraordinary Request and Ordinary Things in Ordinary Ways

Extraordinary Request

When you think of great prayer requests in Scripture, what comes to mind? Joshua’s request to God for the sun to stand still at Gibeon so Israel could rout their enemies? Jabez’s prayer for God to bless him and increase his borders? Hezekiah’s prayer for deliverance in the face of the Assyrians? The options are endless. And at least a couple of these have been coopted as formulaic means for unlocking blessing in your life, which is probably not the wisest approach to them. But what other great requests? What about this request in Matthew 6:9–10:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Is this not the most earth-shaking request that could possibly be made?! Father, may your name be made holy in all the earth, and may your kingdom come, and your will be done on earth just as it is in heaven. What an colossal request—that all the earth would recognize the holiness of God and that God’s kingdom would break out from eternity and break into creation, invading all of earth with God’s will!? This must be the greatest request in all of Scripture. Could this possibly happen? Will this actually happen? (Spoiler Alert) Yes. If you skip ahead to the end of your Bible, you will find this in Revelation 21:1–4:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Simply stunning. What, then, are we to do in the meantime? What do we do in anticipation of such an earth-shaking request? How do we participate in this coming reality now? What do we do? We do ordinary things in ordinary ways.

 

Ordinary Things in Ordinary Ways

Given this awesome reality, given that we sit on this freight train called creation and time that is charging toward this extraordinary end, does it surprise you that I say we should busy ourselves with doing some very ordinary things? Well, just consider what follows this extraordinary prayer request in Matthew 6:11–13.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

This prayer, then, could sound something like this.

“Father, in light of this extraordinary, amazing request that your name will be hallowed in all the earth, that your kingdom and your will would come crashing into and cover the earth just like in heaven, will you

  • Provide my food for me today on my lunch break, and please give me something to eat for dinner too.
  • Also, help me to see, believe in, and depend on the life you offer in Jesus, the bread of life, when I go to the Word today.
  • And please forgive my sins. Especially for lashing out in anger earlier, and for caring too much about money, and for my self-absorption and pride that causes me to criticize and manipulate my wife (or husband), children, that guy I work with, and for my laziness, and for my obsession with everything but you.
  • Also, help me to forgive my wife (or husband), my coworker, my friend, that one guy who doesn’t like me very much, when they wrong me, and help me not hold a grudge like I am prone to do.
  • Also, God, please keep me from those things that tempt me so much—anger, lust, pride, coveting, spending too much time on social media. These things end up turning my heart toward evil.
  • So please, I’m asking that you would keep me from evil and the evil one who prowls around seeking to destroy me.”

What do we do in the midst of these extraordinary realities of the inevitable kingdom of God? (1) Depend on God for our ordinary, everyday physical and spiritual provisions, (2) confess and repent of sin, (3) forgive others’ sin, and (4) turn away from sin and evil in dependance on God. You could categorize these broadly as (1) depending on God to provide and (2) fighting sin.

These are some of the most basic, ordinary things we are called to do as Christians. Yet, this is God’s will in the midst of his coming kingdom.

 

God’s Will

(1) Depending on God to Provide

Depending on God for our daily physical and spiritual provisions is his will, because it indicates our belief and trust in his sovereignty, care, and sureness of his coming kingdom. Perhaps that’s why only a few verses later we read this in Matthew 6:31–33:

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

This is normal, ordinary dependence on God for daily physical food. But this is also, normal, ordinary dependence on God for spiritual food. John 6:29, 35:

Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent… Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

We depend on God to provide our physical and spiritual needs. And then we actively go to the pantry and grab some cereal, and we actively come to Jesus in the Word and prayer in dependence that he will give us grace and mercy to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

 

(2) Fighting Sin

Depending on God in this way leads to God’s name being made holy in all the earth because his name is made holy in individual lives—your life. Depending on God in this way leads to his will being done on earth just as it is in heaven. And this dependence on God characterizes our fight against sin. First Thessalonians 4:3 begins this way:

For this is the will of God, your sanctification:

God’s will for your life is your sanctification. Now in this context, the specific sin in view is sexual sin, but this is a concept that applies to all sins. We depend on God’s grace and mercy for when we do sin. And so we actively confess and repent. And we depend on God to keep us from being tempted beyond our ability and to always provide of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). And so we use wisdom and actively seek to avoid and put up safeguards against the things that might tempt us. And we depend on God to keep us from evil and our adversary, the devil. So we actively renounce his ways and pray for God’s authority over him to come to bear on our lives. This is seemingly basic, ordinary Christianity. We depend on God and so we actively fight sin.

 

Conclusion

As Christians, we are aware of and participate in the most extraordinary realities. God’s eternal name, his kingdom, and his will shall all come to bear on this earth. Heaven will flood the earth, and God will dwell with us. And, God wills ordinary rhythmic disciplines of grace—active dependence on God for physical and spiritual provision, confessing of and repenting of sin, forgiving others’ sins, and turning away from evil—as one of the primary means to bring this about. I confess I was partly inspired to write this specific post because I have recently been listening to a new album called Ordinary Ways by John Guerra. In that album, Guerra hits on this very reality. One lyric in his song titled, “Thank You, Lord” is especially fitting:

Daily bread

Daily breath

Ordinary

Faithfulness

Christ in me

More and more

Let it be

Thank You, Lord

Through seemingly ordinary things in seemingly ordinary ways, God makes us look more and more like his Son, Jesus. In doing so, God grants this extraordinary request that his name would be hallowed, that his kingdom would come, and that his will would be done on earth as it is in heaven. And, what we’ll discover in the end, is that none of this is very ordinary at all.

What Leads to Abortion?

January 22 marked the 49th anniversary of the Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision that overturned limitations on abortion in almost every state. Since that time, about 60 million unborn children have been aborted in this country.

Three years after that decision, I was a 20-year-old junior at Davidson. I professed Christ, but thought I knew better than Scripture what was right and what was wrong. I had been in a relationship for more than a year with a young woman – let’s call her Susan. We were involved sexually –that was one area where I thought my moral judgment was superior to Scripture. But I thought – if we are involved this way, we should be responsible and make plans for what we would do should she become pregnant. So I told her: Should that happen, we can get an abortion in Charlotte.

Susan said something like: “I don’t want to get pregnant. We’ll be careful so there’s little likelihood that I’ll get pregnant. But should that happen- I want to keep our baby.”

She said: “Our baby.”

I had thought of the possible pregnancy as

  • inconvenient,
  • unsettling,
  • a distraction from our plans,
  • a problem we would have to deal with.

And Susan said: “Our baby.”

She rightly saw that possible pregnancy as the beginning of a life – the life of our child. I, that potential child’s father, had planned to do away with him or her. That is: had planned to kill him or her. If – as Jesus says – a man who lusts after a woman has already committed adultery (Matthew 5:27-28), surely the man who would have advocated abortion, who planned to pay for an abortion, is already guilty of it. I am guilty.

I’m sad to say that that sobering moment in 1976 did not lead to an immediate change in my actions or in my attitude. But her statement did plant a seed that eventually sprouted and grew to a horror over abortion.

I tell that story to make clear: I’m guilty of this evil. If you have had an abortion or if you have advocated for an abortion, I share your guilt. Indeed, the message of this sermon is: All of us are guilty of what leads to abortion. The same factors that influence mothers to abort their children, the same factors that lead fathers to want their children aborted, influence all of us, tempt all of us to assert our autonomy and reject the God of the universe.

We guilty sinners have only one hope. And that one hope is a merciful and gracious God Who sent His Son to die for guilty sinners like us so that we might believe in Him and so be saved. We need to believe this Gospel. And we need the light of God’s Word to shine its truth on us, clarifying our thoughts, laying bare the lies, the falsehoods that lead us down the path to destruction. I pray that God would do that now, even in this sermon.

Abortion Kills a Person

For many years abortion advocates argued that the fetus (and of course they deliberately use that technical-sounding term Instead of “baby” or “child” or “infant” – words matter) is just a lump of tissue, part of the mother’s body, and thus has no more moral standing than your appendix. Such statements are less prevalent now, in part because of the advances in ultrasound technology – we now can see these little ones only a handful of weeks after conception.

But thousands of years before ultrasounds, God made clear in His revelation: That “fetus” is a person, is a human baby. We’ll note three ways He does that this morning (we could add more).

First: Scripture uses the same word for children before and after birth.

As noted, those who advocate abortion consciously use “fetus” to distinguish that supposed lump of tissue from a baby. The authors of Scripture – and thus God Himself – use the same word in both Hebrew and Greek. Check it out. Genesis 25:22 refers to Jacob and Esau in the womb by the same Hebrew word used for Moses after he is born in Exodus 2:2. In the New Testament, Luke 1:41 refers to John the Baptist in Elizabeth’s womb by the same word used of Jesus after He is born in the next chapter (Luke 2:12).

Second: John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s womb.

That’s what the angel Gabriel says (Luke 1:15). Your appendix cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit. A lump of tissue cannot respond to the presence of the incarnate Son of God (also in utero) as the unborn John the Baptist does in Luke 1:41.

Third: David – and all of us – were sinners the moment we were conceived.

David writes, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5 ESV). Or, as the NET renders that verse: “Look, I was guilty of sin from birth, a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.” As the Apostle Paul teaches in Romans 5, sin entered the world through Adam, and all of us inherit that sin, then add to it. An appendix cannot be a sinner.

So, yes: Unborn children are human persons. Scripture makes that clear. Abortion kills a person.

What leads to abortion?

Listen to the following statements. Do they sound familiar?

  • “My body is mine – I can do what I want with it!”
  • “As long as I’m not hurting someone else, who are you to tell me what is right and wrong?”
  • “I know who I am. Only I can know who I am. I know what I need to do to fulfill who I am.”

These are all claims to autonomy, to independence, to self-sovereignty. Though people rarely refer explicitly to God in such statements, implicitly they are saying, “My body is mine, not God’s;” “God can’t tell me what is right and wrong;” “God can’t tell me who I am, what I need to do to fulfill who I am.”

You can see how such attitudes lead to abortion:

  • “My uterus is part of my body – I can do what I want with it.”
  • “This fetus is part of my body – I know it’s right to get rid of it.”
  • “I know that having a baby now would not fulfill my identity, so I will do away with it”

Some who make statements like these then proceed with abortions, apparently with no qualms. Some are even proud of their abortions. Others go into abortion with many qualms and misgivings, thinking, “I’m trapped – all options are terrible, all seem bad – but abortion seems the least bad.” Or, someone with a church background who in the past has thought abortion to be wrong might think, “I can’t follow what God says because it’s too hard, too painful, too disruptive.” While even others are more like my 20-year-old self, not pondering the issue at all, just assuming abortion to be the responsible, right action.

But, you see, both those with qualms and those who are unthinking are, like those with no qualms, rejecting God’s sovereignty and asserting their autonomy. They are acting as if there is no God ruling over them, as if they are not created, contingent beings.

This attitude leads to abortion. This attitude leads to almost every sin. It’s often unstated. It’s often not even conscious. But when we reject what God says and choose our own path, we say by our actions, “You do not rule me, God. I rule myself.”

What Does God Say?

We could look at many specific statements from Scripture to combat this attitude. In a bit, we will look at a few. But the primary, most powerful argument against this attitude, comes from the overarching story of the Bible. Here’s a summary:

God created mankind for a purpose: To glorify Him by trusting Him, depending on Him, and enjoying Him forever. But the first man and the first woman rejected that purpose by asserting their autonomy. They acted as if they knew better than God what was in their own interest. So believing Satan’s lie, they rebelled against God. All of us since then, throughout history, are infected with that rebellion.

God would have been just, He would have been righteous to destroy all humanity after that initial rebellion. Instead, He instituted a plan – a plan to create a new, redeemed, perfected humanity that would fulfill His purpose.

He promised that a descendant of the first woman would crush the head of Satan (Genesis 3:15). Later He chose one man, Abram, out of this rebellious world, and promised that through his descendant God would bless all the families of the nations (Genesis 12:1-3). Although his descendants, the Hebrews, are rebellious themselves century after century, od continues to carry out His plan faithfully. He shows them that sin and rebellion necessitate a death if justice is to be done. Eventually from His people He raises up a king, David, and promises that this man’s descendant will rule over an eternal kingdom of righteousness and peace (2 Samuel 7:12-16, Isaiah 9:6-7). Indeed, He promises that a suffering servant will take on himself the just punishment for the people’s rebellion (Isaiah 53:4-6).

The people clearly show that they cannot fix themselves. God’s plan, God’s action alone can fulfill His purpose for humanity. They are dependent. He is sovereign.

So, at exactly the right time, God sent His Son Jesus into the world. He alone of all those born to women was not infected with sin from conception. He alone of all humanity loved God with all His heart, soul, mind, and strength every minute of every day. He alone of all humanity loved every person He encountered as He loved Himself. Thus He alone of all humanity did not deserve to die for His own sins.

Fulfilling God’s plan, rebellious humans then killed Him, nailing Him to the cross. Through that act, God fulfilled the promise of a suffering servant dying for the sins of His people. God then raised Him from the dead, exalting Him to His right hand, where He reigns until He returns to crush Satan’s head and to conquer all rebels, establishing His promised eternal kingdom. God then sent His Holy Spirit to open the eyes of rebels, to bring us to faith in Jesus, and to empower us to go to every tribe, tongue, people, and nation to speak this Gospel. God thereby is fulfilling His promise to Abram that some from every people group will believe. We see that great fulfillment in Revelation 7:9-12.

That’s the story of the Bible.

It’s not the existentialist story of courageous men and women looking inside themselves, deciding who they are, and boldly striking out on their own to fulfill their purpose.

It’s a story:

  • of man’s inability and God’s ability,
  • of man’s evil and God’s goodness,
  • of our moral darkness, and God’s moral light,
  • of man’s repeated failures, and God’s continual faithfulness,
  • of man’s dependence on God for anything good and God’s grace in showering us with undeserved goodness.

That overarching story shows clearly that the lies that lead to abortion and other sins are indeed lies. Only God can tell us what is right and wrong. Only God can tell us how to fulfill our purpose. We do not belong to ourselves. We belong to Him by right of creation – He made us for Himself – and by right of redemption – He gives us life when our rebellion deserves death.

Although we can draw those conclusions from the overarching story of the Bible, as promised, now let’s look at some specific texts that counter the three primary lies mentioned above. Having seen the big story, the specific statements become that much more powerful.

First Lie: “My body is my own.”

The Word: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,  for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Your body is not your own. Your body belongs to God.

Second Lie: “Only I can decide what is right and wrong for me.”

The Word: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

The Hebrews word translated “heart” refers not only to desires, but to the entire inner self, including the mind. This verse tells us that we cannot think straight. Our moral sense fails, again and again and again. We rationalize and justify all sorts of evil. The story of the Bible brings this out hundreds of times. Thus Proverbs 28:26: “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered [by God].” (The word translated “mind” in this verse is the same word translated “heart” in Jeremiah 17:9). Similarly Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Think of walking along a trail and coming to a fork. The trail to the right looks easy, while the trail to the left looks exceptionally challenging. The trail to the right seems better – but God tells you what you can’t know on your own: There is great danger around the corner of the supposedly easier trail. Will you believe Him?

Third Lie: “Only I can forge my identity. God’s way would hinder me from becoming who I really am.”

The Word: Isaiah 48:17: “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go” (emphasis added). He has to teach us to profit, to teach us what will be to our good. Indeed, that’s why He gives us commandments: Deuteronomy 10:13 (NET):  “Keep the Lord’s commandments and statutes that I am giving you today for your own good” (emphasis added). His commandments are not arbitrary. Nor are they simply His preferences, for His good. His way, His road, is the road to life – as Isaiah 55:1-3 tells us:

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;
and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live (emphasis added).

Far from hindering you from becoming who you really are, God’s way is the way to true life, to true joy, to true fulfillment.

So we’ve seen both from the overarching story of the Bible and from specific texts that the attitudes that lead to abortion and other sins are all lies. They are falsehoods. They lead in the end to sorrow, to failure, to death, to destruction.

Instead of such arrogant, rebellious attitudes, Scripture tells us:

  • Come to God as little children;
  • Submit to His wisdom, His strength;
  • Delight in your dependence on Him.

As Jesus says in Matthew 18:3: “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” So the Psalmist writes:

O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore (Psalm 131).

When we become like children, we come to God acknowledging that we don’t know what is best for us. My three-year-old grandson Simon apart from his parents’ intervention would eat nothing but fruit. Similarly my 7-month-old grandson Shepherd would gobble up watermelon, even though it gives him hives. They need loving guidance; they need restrictions; so do we all. God graciously gives us such guidance in His Word – through its overall story and through specific texts.

Conclusion

As you know, the Supreme Court is considering a case that could overturn Roe v Wade. I pray that that happens. But while that would reduce dramatically the number of abortions in many states, abortions would continue – and would probably increase – in other states. And all the other sins that flow out of the attitudes that lead to abortion would continue as before.

Our hope is not in a Supreme Court decision. Our hope is in God – in His mercy, in His grace, in the power of the Gospel through the Holy Spirit. So I ask you:

  • Have you had an abortion?
  • Have you advised someone else to have an abortion?
  • Would you – like me – have argued for abortion or had an abortion in case of an unplanned pregnancy?

Confess that to God – and to a strong Christian. Jesus died to take on Himself the punishment for that sin – if you throw yourself on God’s mercy. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). You can be clean before a holy and righteous God. Confess. Trust Him. A broken and contrite heart He will not despise (Psalm 51:17).

And I ask you:

  • How has this cultural obsession with autonomy affected you?
  • How have these same attitudes led you into sins other than abortion?

The exhortation to you is the same: Confess. Repent. Throw yourself on God’s mercy. Identify those wrong attitudes – those wrong attitudes that bombard us every day in this culture. Turn from them. Become like a child before God, basking in His love, crying out to Him in your pain, submitting to His wise counsel. Come to the Father through the sacrifice of the Son by the power of the Spirit. God redeems rebels:

  • Rebels who acknowledge they are children before God
  • Rebels who acknowledge they are dependent on God
  • Rebels who know that true life is found only in Jesus.

I’m a sinner. From the moment I was conceived I have been a rebel. So please join this rebel. Come to God. And know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Bruised and broken by the fall;
If you tarry ’til you’re better,
You will never come at all.

Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him. (Joseph Hart, 1759)

Christmas, Confession, and Forgiveness

This season we will sing one of Charles Wesley’s great hymns:

Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild:
God and sinners reconciled!”

How does the birth of the King lead to the reconciliation of God with sinners?

As 1 John 1:7 tells us: “The blood of Jesus [God’s] Son cleanses us from all sin.” That is, Jesus took on Himself the punishment that we deserve for our rebellion against God. On the cross, God “laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). These benefits of His death accrue to all who trust in Him as the payment for their sins, who see Him as their true King, who treasure Him above all the world has to offer. Then, reconciled to God through Jesus, we live our lives to His glory – not sinlessly, but continually forgiven because of the redemption we have in Jesus.

Thus, John continues in his first epistle:

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)

1 John 1:9 leads to a question: Is our forgiveness contingent on our confession? John has just said that believers can’t say they have no sin. We all sin every day. We confess those sins that we are aware of. But what about the sins we’re not aware of? Can I be lost – not reconciled to God – because I never confess the sins I’ve failed to recognize?

The question arises from a misunderstanding of the verse. John is not talking about a one-for-one relationship between a sin confessed and a sin forgiven: “I lusted after this woman; now I confessed it; only then does God forgive me.” Rather I confess my general sinfulness and any known sins upon coming to faith; I confess my sinfulness and any known sins daily to my loving, merciful Father; I regularly ask Him to search my heart and see if there is any grievous way in me (Psalm 139:23-24); I rightly agree with His Word in calling sin sin and not belittling or making excuses for any of my sins; I hate my remaining known and unknown sins and actively “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11). That’s the idea behind “if we confess our sins.” Having done that, I trust that God is faithful and just to forgive all known and unknown sins and present me as perfectly clean before Himself because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

Understood this way, confession is not something over and above “believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Confession is the daily manifestation of faith in Jesus, a daily living out of recognizing Him as Savior, Master, and Treasure, a consistent exhibit of the Gospel of God’s grace.

The baby in the manger we celebrate this season is God in the flesh, come to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), so that all of us sinners who believe in Him can be reconciled to God the Father, and then live as His beloved children every day.

So joyfully confess your sins before Him – and, forgiven in Christ, live out the true meaning of Christmas.

How Should We Love Our Country? “We and Our Fathers Have Sinned”

“My country, right or wrong!”

During my early teens, in the middle of the anti-Vietnam War movement, some countered the protesters with this phrase, saying it is the duty of citizens to back their country – even if it is in the wrong.

My father was in Vietnam, risking his life as a pilot. He had talked with the family about why he was going, why the war was important. So I had frustrations with the antiwar movement. But even as a teen, I had qualms about, “My country, right or wrong.”

I didn’t know at the time that it originated way back in 1816. A naval hero, Stephen Decatur, who had defeated the North African Barbary pirates, gave this toast: To “our country: In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right, and always successful, right or wrong.” Over time, the phrase lost its nuance, becoming: My country, right or wrong.

What should be our attitude toward our country – toward this country, the USA, which celebrates its 245th birthday today?

Today’s text, Psalm 106, helps us answer that question. Like the previous psalm, this one looks back at the history of Israel. But whereas Psalm 105 relates the history of God’s faithfulness to His promise to Israel and His sovereign control over all events in bringing about His plan, Psalm 106 highlights the sins and failures of the nation. God in response brings judgment – but nevertheless fulfills His promise.

Verse 6 introduces the theme: “Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.”

We today can say the same about our country. We and our fathers have sinned. Yet there are some voices today calling for us to say little else about our country’s history, only: “We have sinned, we have sinned!”

But both for Israel and for us there is much more to say. Let’s see how this psalm helps us to know what more to say.

We’ll examine it under four headings:

  • A Command, An Observation, and a Request
  • Israel’s sins
  • God’s Righteousness
  • How Should We Love Our Country?

A Command, An Observation, and a Request

Though the confession of sin in verse 6 provides the theme for the bulk of the psalm, the author does not begin with sin. He begins instead where we should always begin: With God. Indeed, the psalm begins and ends with the command, “Praise the Lord!”

  • He is the good one.
  • His love never ends.
  • He has acted time and again showing that love.
  • We fail, but He never fails.
  • We could praise Him for the rest of our lives and never finish declaring all the praise He deserves.

So praise Him! Thank Him – whether you are rejoicing in good times or are suffering in bad times. God is always good, always worthy of praise.

That’s the command.

The observation is in verse 3: “Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!” God observes justice; God does righteousness at all times. So we are blessed, we are fulfilling the purpose of our creation, when we act like Him.

The psalmist will highlight many cases in which the Israelites fail to do this. But nevertheless maintains: saying: This is the way to true joy: Be like Him.

The request is in verses 4-5:

Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people; help me when you save them, that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance. (emphasis added)

Given what the psalmist is about to say, this is of great importance. The psalmist knows God will fulfill His promises to His people. He knows that despite all that he is about to say about sin, God will show favor to them, He will save them. He wants to be part of God’s people, sharing in that future.

Just so with us.

  • May we fulfill the command: Praising Him and thanking Him continually.
  • May we hold fast to the observation: That true blessings come only to those who by His grace take on His character.
  • May we – seeing His church, with all her weaknesses and failures – may we long to part of that church, part of Jesus’ Bride, confident that God will perfect His church and glorify His Name through her.

Israel’s Sins

This brings us to verse 6: “Both we and are fathers have sinned.”

The psalm then recounts seven specific sins at particular times prior to their entering the Promised Land, followed by a brief description of how those sins continued once they entered the land. All seven result from a failure to fulfill the earlier command, to remember the earlier observation, or to continue to make the earlier request.

First sin: At the Red Sea: Rebellion through failure to remember (Psalm 106:7-12)

God has shown His power and love through sending the plagues on the Egyptians while sparing the Israelites. But when the Egyptian army approaches them when their backs are to the Red Sea, the people forget God’s love, God’s power, and God’s faithfulness. They “did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled” (Psalm 106:7). As recorded in Exodus 14:12, they cry out, “It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

Second sin: In the Wilderness: Putting God to the test (Psalm 106:13-15)

This incident is recorded in Numbers 11. God has provided them for their sustenance miraculously, sending manna six mornings every week. But they cry out, “Oh that we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at” (Numbers 11:4-6). Despising God’s marvelous gift, they put His love to the test, effectively saying, “If God really loved us, He would give us whatever we want.”

Third sin: In the Wilderness: Jealousy of God’s chosen leaders (Psalm 106:16-18)

In Numbers 16:3, certain men say, “All in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you [Moses and Aaron] exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?” Yet God had shown in miraculous ways who His chosen leaders were. Thus Moses says in Numbers 16:11, “it is against the LORD that you and all your company have gathered together.”

Fourth sin: At Sinai: Idolatry (Psalm 106:19-23)

While Moses is on the mountain, the people have Aaron make a golden calf and worship it:

They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a metal image. They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt (Psalm 106:19-21).

Paul alludes to this passage in Romans 1:

Although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images (Romans 1:21-23).

Fifth sin: In the Wilderness: Lack of faith in God’s promise (Psalm 106:24-27)

This passage refers to the incident recorded in Numbers 13 and 14. Twelve men return from spying out the Promised Land. They all agree that it is fruitful, but ten of the spies say that the nation will be destroyed if they enter, for the land is populated by powerful nations, including giants. The people then want to choose a leader to take them back to Egypt.

As Psalm 106:24 says: “Then they despised the pleasant land, having no faith in his promise.”

This is the fundamental sin: Lack of faith in God, lack of faith in His promises.

Sixth sin: In the Wilderness: Worshiping false gods (Psalm 106:28-31)

Rather than destroying the inhabitants of the land, as God instructs, many of the people participate in the worship of Midianite gods (Numbers 25). This worship includes practicing sexual immorality with Midianite women.

Seventh sin: In the Wilderness: Not trusting God (Psalm 106:32-33)

God has provided miraculously for the needs of His people time and again. Yet when they lack water, they blame Moses, saying, “Why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink” (Numbers 20:5).

God tells Moses to strike a rock, and He will cause water to flow. But Moses, angry with the people, speaks as if the water comes by his own power. God then punishes him.

The General Sin: In the Promised Land: Desiring to be like other nations (Psalm 106:34-39)

God set them apart from every other nation. But they despise this huge privilege, this great honor of belonging to Him, of being unique, and therefore repeat the earlier sins of idolatry, failing to remember, and lacking faith in God’s promise.

Twice in this sorry narrative, the psalmist deviates from the litany of sin, highlighting the way God uses Individuals who hate the sin and take action in quite different ways.

  • The sixth sin: God sends a plague in punishment for the worship of Midianite gods. Leaders of the congregation are mourning over the sin and pleading with God for the people. At that very moment, a man brings a Midianite woman into the camp right in front of those pleading with God. They enter his tent and engage in sexual relations. Phinehas, Aaron’s grandson and thus in the priestly line, enters the tent and kills them both. As the psalmist says, “Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stayed. And that was counted to him as righteousness from generation to generation forever” (Psalm 106:30-31)
  • The fourth sin: God tells Moses He will destroy the people for their sin with the golden calf, and will make a new nation from Moses’ descendants. But Moses pleads with God. The psalmist tells us, “[God] said he would destroy them – had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them” (Psalm 106:23).

These two Individuals are faithful to God in the midst of a sinful people. They both intervene – but in quite different ways. Phinehas acts, displaying God’s righteous wrath. Once that act takes place, God ends His plague. Moses on the other hand prays. He agrees that the people deserve judgment, but prays for God to be glorified among the nations by continuing to go with the people, so that other nations won’t be able to say that He brought them into the desert to kill them.

Thus God uses individuals in the midst of His sinful people for His good purposes.

God’s Righteousness

What is God’s righteousness?

It is more than His doing acts that are right and just. God not only does acts that are right and just; He is at His very core right and just. To do acts that are right and just is to display who He is – that is, to glorify Himself. So we can think of God’s righteousness as His living up to His character, His displaying His character. He does that in this psalm both by punishing sin and by being faithful to His promise. Let’s look at these in turn.

God punishes all the recounted sins except the first, at the Red Sea. The account of God’s righteous punishment of sin culminates in Psalm 106:41-43, where the psalmist summarizes the book of Judges:

He gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power. Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity.

God hates sin. He sees to it that every sin is punished. This is one important aspect of His righteousness.

But God also is righteous in being faithful to His promise, despite the sins of the people. We see this in verse 23, when God turns away His wrath after the incident with the golden calf after Moses prays; in verse 30 when He stops the plague after Phinehas acts; in verse 43, delivering the people many times. As the psalmist records:

Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress, when he heard their cry. For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. He caused them to be pitied by all those who held them captive (Psalm 106:44-46, emphasis added).

While commenting on the Red Sea experience, Psalm 106:8 makes this point most succinctly: “Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power.”

God always displays His justice, His hatred for sin. And God always displays His love, His mercy, His grace. In both ways, He works “for His Name’s sake,” for His glory. That is His righteousness. And thus that righteousness is the only hope of sinful people like you and me.

How Should We Love Our Country?

How is our country today similar to ancient Israel? How is it dissimilar?

We certainly can say with the psalmist, “Both we and our fathers have sinned.” Similar to Psalm 106, we could look at the history of the United States and make a list of past and present sins. That list might include:

  • Saying all men are created equal and then not treating many as equals. At different times and in different ways, those sins have been against African Americans, women, Native Americans, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, Poles, Roman Catholics, and others.
  • Putting to death over 60 million unborn children in the last five decades. And though praise God the annual number of abortions has decreased, still today one in five pregnancies in this country ends in abortion; in some cities, that proportion is over one half.
  • Throughout our history, we as a people have run after idols: The idol of freedom, as if we are free to do whatever we may desire; the idol of prosperity; the idol of power; and, yes, the idol of country – “My country, right or wrong” is a symptom of that idolatry.

So, yes, like ancient Israel, our country’s history contains a long list of sins, of rebellions against God. We could say the same about every country today.

There are other ways that all countries, including the US, are similar to ancient Israel. Here are four:

  • God’s sovereign hand is over both. As God says in Jeremiah 27:5, “It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, and I give it to whomever it seems right to me.” He removes governments and sets up governments. He rules all nations.
  • There’s an element of corporate responsibility for our national sins. The psalmist says, “We and our fathers have sinned.” He doesn’t have to be guilty himself of any of these seven specific sins to say that. Recall that Daniel confesses sins of the people, saying, “We have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules” (Daniel 9:5). We know of no such sins committed by Daniel as an individual; indeed, the account of his life is exemplary.
  • We all have an Individual responsibility to act for God’s glory in our spheres of influence – as we’ve seen that Phinehas and Moses did. Whether through public actions, like Phinehas, or through private prayer, like Moses, we are to intervene for the good of our people and the glory of God’s Name.
  • God’s character doesn’t change – so our responsibility doesn’t change. The same God who punished and showed mercy to Israel still punishes, still shows mercy.

If our countries today are similar in all these ways to ancient Israel, what is the difference?

The difference is the promise.

God makes no promise to the US as a country. This nation is not God’s chosen people. There is no promise that through America, through our descendants, all the families of nations will be blessed. God does not promise a coming American Messiah.

The promise today instead is to God’s church – God’s worldwide church. The Messiah already has come – Jesus Christ. His Kingdom will endure forever. All the promises of God are “Yes” in Him.

Therefore: We do not know if the US will endure as a country until Jesus returns. We do not know if we will drift into irrelevance over time (as the Roman Empire did over centuries), or be conquered by a foreign power (as the Babylonian Empire was), or experience a massive revival and be a major force for the advance of the Gospel.

So given who we are as a country – how we are like and yet unlike ancient Israel – how can we love our country?

The answer is in the beginning of Psalm 106: the command, the observation, and the request.

  • We are to thank Among mighty deeds of the Lord is placing you in this country. We all are beneficiaries of the history of this country; we inherit a blessing by being born into or immigrating to the US. So thank God for the positive aspects of the history of this nation, especially for highlighting the idea that all are created equal. Thank Him for raising up those who sacrificed so that we might have this inheritance. Thank Him for freedom of speech – especially the freedom to criticize the government, which most people have never had. Thank Him for our elected officials, praying for them. Thank Him for freedom to worship, and pray that it may continue.
  • We are to know the observation: “Blessed are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times” (Psalm 106:3). Knowing this, we ask: How can we take the inheritance we have in this country and improve it? What can I do individually – in my family, in my neighborhood, in my city, in my church? Perhaps God will use you like Phinehas and Moses, having you play a major role in improving our wider society. But don’t look down on the seemingly small ways you influence those around you. Particularly don’t look down on prayer: For national and local leaders, for churches, for us corporately as a nation.
  • We are to make the same request: “Help me be among your people.” Our most important identity is in Christ. Our most important citizenship is in the Kingdom of God, not in the US. Indeed, the best way for you and me to love the US is to be an ambassador of the Kingdom of God, to be like Christ, to follow Christ, to love with His love, to serve by His power, to proclaim the Gospel and to act according to His righteousness.

Love the United States on this 245th birthday. Love our country by thanking God, by acting and praying, by being an ambassador.

Conclusion

So what about that phrase: “My country, right or wrong”?

That phrase does not represent biblical patriotism. No ancient Israelite should have said that; we surely shouldn’t today.

Yet: a lesser known incident in the history of that famous phrase surprisingly brings out the right way to understand it.

Carl Schurz immigrated from what is now Germany shortly before 1850. He became a citizen, served in the Union army in the Civil War, and in 1868 was elected to the US Senate from Missouri as a Republican. Disappointed with the presidency of Ulysses Grant, however, he left the Republican party and attempted to form a new one.

In 1873 a fellow senator accused Schurz of working to undermine the US. Implying that Schurz was still a foreigner, with his allegiance divided, this other senator said Schurz should live out, “My country, right or wrong.”

Schurz replied: “In one sense I do say, ‘My country, right or wrong:’ If right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.”

May we as ambassadors of the Kingdom of God be His agents to keep right what is good in this country, to right what is wrong, especially in our individual spheres of influence, and to thank and praise Him that our hope is not in any country, but in the redeeming power of Jesus, who has all authority in heaven and on earth. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed (Daniel 7:14).

Christians, do you have a sad resentment of other things and not of sin? Worldly tears fall to the earth, but godly tears are kept in a bottle (Ps. 56.8). Judge not holy weeping superfluous…. A Prayer for Our Country for Her 244th Birthday

Father God,

We thank You for the United States of America.

  • What a privilege You grant us, O Father, to live in the first country that stated in its core documents that “All men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.”
  • What a great blessing to have wise founders who agreed with Your revelation of the fallenness of man, and therefore set up a system of checks and balances within the Constitution to diminish the opportunity for power to corrupt.
  • What a further blessing that our first president voluntarily stepped down from office, and therefore set an example for peaceful succession that we have followed for over 200 years.
  • Thank You for the previously unheard of economic freedom we have had in this country, and the consequent abundance of material goods that we are blessed with.
  • Thank you for those who have given their lives that this experiment in government of the people, by the people, and for the people might not perish from the earth.
  • Thank You for the freedom we have to worship as You instruct, without interference from the state, and for the freedom to speak against our leaders and their policies without fear of imprisonment or worse.
  • Thank You for the blessings of past revivals and awakenings that have led to the salvation of millions and the transformation of entire communities.
  • Thank You for the strategic role You have allowed the American church to play in reaching so many people groups with the Gospel of Your grace.

Whether we ourselves arrived recently or our ancestors have been in the US since its founding, we are blessed to live in this great country – and we acknowledge and thank You that this, along with every good gift, comes from You, and is undeserved by us.

We also confess, Father, the sins of our country, how so often we have failed to live up to our founding ideals.

  • Chanting security and freedom, we have tolerated or even advocated the oppression of different ethnic groups, including Native Americans, African Americans, and Japanese Americans.
  • In the name of “freedom” of choice we have tolerated or even advocated the killing of tens of millions of babies before they took a single breath.
  • In the name of “freedom” we have excused a lack of concern for the poor and downtrodden.
  • Crying out “freedom of religion” we have spawned distortions of Your Word and have bowed down to idols – including those of security, power, and wealth.
  • We have even replaced You with the USA, worshiping our country instead of You, while acting as if Your honor and glory are yoked together with the success of the United States.

We acknowledge, Father, that You have no more need of this country than you had of the Roman Empire. We continue to exist as a country because of Your mercy, and You could justly sweep us away in a moment, with no harm to Your plans for the coming Kingdom.

We confess in addition, gracious Father, that we as individuals have been infected with the virus of the false conception of freedom promulgated so widely in our country – as if freedom only means freedom of choice. You tell us in Romans 6 that true freedom is found in Christ, as we are free from sin and so slaves to righteousness. Cure us of this virus, we pray! May we be free to become what our Creator intends us to be, thereby becoming like Christ! Vaccinate us against further infection, and so use us to help others to find the only true freedom and the only lasting joy: Slavery to You.

By Your command, we seek the welfare of this country where you have sent us, even as we know that our true country is Your Kingdom. Enable us to be good citizens that bless our neighbors, shining the light of Your Gospel in all of our interactions. Make us truly instruments of Your peace and witnesses to Your grace, and so use us to bring many to Christ and to heal our land of its remaining ethnic and racial hatred, thereby forming a more perfect union. Grant us, Your church, wisdom, love, unity, and boldness to be the salt and light you intend.

O Loving Father, we so long to see Your Name magnified in all the cities, towns, and rural areas of this great land. Open eyes, by Your grace. Stir up Your church, by Your Spirit. Conform us to Christ, by Your power. Bless us so that we might be a blessing – and so bless this our country on its 244th birthday.

For the glory of Jesus our Savior we pray, Amen.

What Can We Accomplish?

[This devotion is taken from the concluding section of the sermon, “Does God Need Our Help to Fulfill His Plan?” preached February 24, 2019. Audio will be available at this page soon.]

“Apart from Me, you can do nothing.”

So says the Lord Jesus (John 15:5).

Really, Jesus? Nothing?

It sure seems like we do things apart from Jesus.

So, think: What can we accomplish?

Consider: We have abilities, intelligence, experiences, family backgrounds, and education. Building on those, we plan, we research, we produce, we work hard, we train our minds and bodies, we develop our talents, we start and grow businesses, we write books, we perform jobs, we love our families, we raise our children, we serve our countries, we help our cities. And so, we – that is, many hardworking and successful people who on a human level are good workers, good neighbors, good citizens, and good friends, Christians and non-Christians – accomplish something of value. Something valuable to us. Something valued by our society. Something that seems good, useful, or helpful.

But note two points:

First: God needs none of that. Remember the story in Ezekiel 37. God commands His prophet to preach to dry, dead bones – and God creates a huge army. He needs none of our efforts to accomplish His purposes, to fulfill His desires. As the Apostle Paul says:

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, … is [not] served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. (Acts 17:24-25, emphasis added)

Second: As stated in those verses, all that we accomplish is a gift from Him. All of it – whether we are Christian or not, whether we actively depended on Him in the process or not. As Deuteronomy 8:17-18 tells us:

Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth.

So apply that idea to yourself:

Not one iota of your success, your hard work, your contribution came from you apart from God. Hear the Apostle Paul once again:

What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it? (1 Corinthians 4:7)

So reflect on your accomplishments. What might you be tempted to be proud of?

For myself: I might be proud of:

  • Earning a PhD
  • Publishing numerous economics articles
  • Leaving a good profession to become a full-time minister of the Gospel
  • Being a husband for nearly 40 years
  • Being the father of six children
  • Planting this church
  • Bringing the Perspectives Course to Charlotte, etc, etc.

Make your own list. And then if you are in Christ, pray something like this with me:

All this is from you, Father God. Whatever has been good, fruitful, productive, helpful, loving, or wise in my life is all from you. Whatever is messed up, wrongheaded, hurtful, hateful, or foolish is from me. If each second You had not given me life and breath, I would have been dead. If You had not graciously given me abilities, perseverance, empathy, and love, my life would have been one fruitless hell hole after another. Yet in Christ Jesus you have chosen me, you have loved me, you have set me apart as holy. You call me your child and assure me nothing will separate me from your love. And you call me along with all your people to be Your agents, Your  ambassadors! You make Your appeal through us: “Be reconciled to God!” (2 Corinthians 5:20). All praise to You, O Father. I love you. Though You do not need me, I gladly serve you. Use this service for Your glory. Fulfill Your plan through me and the rest of Your Church.

So, always remember:

It’s not about you, your ministry, your gifts, your calling – it’s all about God.

You are here to show God’s image, to display Christ. And Christ is both the suffering servant  and the conquering King, both the sacrificial Lamb and the majestic Lion. As we display Christ, we may display Christ- as-Conqueror or Christ-as-Sufferer. Or both. That’s God’s choice. He apportions gifts and outcomes as He chooses. But it is all working together to sum up all things in Christ, pointing to that final day when Jesus returns, and those from every tribe and tongue praise His Name (Revelation 7:9-12).

So there is no place for pride. And there is no place for despair.

Nor is there any place for self-exaltation or church-exaltation or country-exaltation.

Only God-exaltation. Christ exaltation.

May we acknowledge in our hearts what is true in reality: To Him alone belong the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.

Amen.

 

 

At Last! The Psalms!

This Sunday we begin a multi-year sermon series on the book of Psalms. If our Lord is willing, over something like 75 sermons, we’ll cover the entire book from “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked” (Psalm 1:1) to “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 150:5). Most weeks, as on October 9, we’ll consider more than one psalm. We’ll also break up the series into groups of about 15 sermons, returning to Romans to complete that series after the first set of psalms, and interspersing other New Testament series with the remaining psalms.

Why the book of Psalms?

At one level, it’s about time to consider it! While we read Scripture from this book almost every Sunday, only a handful sermons at DGCC have taken any of the psalms as their text.

At another level, the book of Psalms fits well with where we are in our preaching. Both Fred and I have focused in the past several months on key doctrines of the faith – who is God, what is man? How are we not condemned before Him? Where is the world headed? The psalms help us to see and to live out what must follow from such doctrines – the emotions, the affections, the praise, the crying out – as we live life in a sinful, fallen world.

Furthermore, when you read the psalms – personally, in your family, or in corporate worship – you are linking yourself with followers of God over the last three thousand years. Over centuries and millennia, these psalms have expressed and shaped the affections and emotions of God’s people. We pray that God will do the same with us – that our prayers might be shaped by these psalms and our attitudes might become more consistent with biblical doctrine as we hear and speak and live out these psalms.

Let’s look at seven forms that this expressing and shaping of emotions takes (modified from Mark Dever’s similar list in The Message of the Old Testament):

Praise: We proclaim the greatness of our God to all peoples and, indeed, to all creation, citing who He has proclaimed Himself to be:

Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! 
Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. 
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!  
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. 
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 
Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 
Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
Psalm 96:1-7

Remembering: We remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness to His covenant, especially as shown in the history of His people:

When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
indeed, the deep trembled.
The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder;
your arrows flashed on every side.
The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world;
the earth trembled and shook.
Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters;
yet your footprints were unseen.
You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
Psalm 77:16-20

Thanksgiving: Giving thanks in the psalms is not private, between an individual and God. Rather, thanksgiving in the psalms is always a form of public praise. Whether the psalmist is thanking God for assisting him personally or for helping the people, the thanksgiving praises God for such acts:

Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; 
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. 
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. 
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!
Psalm 107:17-22

Trust: Praising God for who He is, remembering His covenant love and faithful deeds, and thanking Him for His work on our behalf all serve to deepen our trust in Him. So the psalms call upon us to trust Him always, especially in the midst of trials and difficulties:

Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. 
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. 
They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.
Psalm 20:6-8

Honest Lament:  Yet while we are in such trials and difficulties, God often seems distant and confusing. We cry out and don’t see an answer; we ask God to intervene, and don’t understand how He is at work. Many psalms reflect this confusion, this darkness; indeed, more than one-third of the psalms contain a lament. One author says there is so much lament in the psalms to “show that the experience of anguish and puzzlement in the life of faith is not a sign of deficient faith, something to be outgrown or put behind one, but rather is intrinsic to the very nature of faith” (R.W.L. Moberly, as quoted by B Waltke et al, The Psalms as Christian Lament, p. 1). Often these laments sound similar to Job’s cries:

O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me? 
Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless. 
Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me. 
They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together. 
You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness.
Psalm 88:14-18

Love for and Obedience to God’s Law:  We delight in God’s revelation of His character in His Law, and strive to follow it by His grace, knowing that in following Him we find true life, true joy.

Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. 
Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. 
I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. 
I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts.
I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. 
I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. 
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 
Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
Psalm 119:97-104

Repentance: Though we love His Law and strive to follow it, we often fall short. So we turn from our sin, confessing that God rightly condemns us and seeking forgiveness by His grace and mercy.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
Psalm 51:1-4

May God be pleased to express and shape our affections and emotions through this great book, and so continue to transform us into His people who live to His glory among all the nations.

 

Bonhoeffer on Confession, Counseling, and the Cross

Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

Anybody who lives beneath the Cross and who has discerned in the Cross of Jesus the utter wickedness of all men and of his own heart will find there is no sin that can ever be alien to him. Anybody who has once been horrified by the dreadfulness of his own sin that nailed Jesus to the Cross will no longer be horrified by even the rankest sins of a brother. Looking at the Cross of Jesus, he knows the human heart. He knows how utterly lost it is in sin and weakness, how it goes astray in the ways of sin, and he also knows that it is accepted in grace and mercy. Only the brother under the Cross can hear a confession.

It is not experience of life but experience of the Cross that makes one a worthy hearer of confessions. The most experienced psychologist or observer of human nature knows infinitely less of the human heart than the simplest Christian who lives beneath the Cross of Jesus. The greatest psychological insight, ability, and experience cannot grasp this one thing: what sin is. Worldly wisdom knows what distress and weakness and failure are, but it does not know the godlessness of man. And so it also does not know that man is destroyed only by his sin and can be healed only by forgiveness. Only the Christian knows this. In the presence of a psychiatrist I can only be a sick man; in the presence of a Christian brother I can dare to be a sinner. The psychiatrist must first search my heart and yet he never plumbs its ultimate depth. The Christian brother knows when I come to him: here is a sinner like myself, a godless man who wants to confess and yearns for God’s forgiveness. The psychiatrist views me as if there were no God. The brother views me as I am before the judging and merciful God in the Cross of Jesus Christ.
