{"id":1680,"date":"2017-02-03T11:32:34","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T16:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.desiringgodchurch.org\/web\/?p=1680"},"modified":"2017-02-03T11:32:34","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T16:32:34","slug":"humble-yourself-before-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.desiringgodchurch.org\/web\/2017\/02\/03\/humble-yourself-before-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Humble Yourself Before God!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those of you following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desiringgodchurch.org\/web\/2012\/12\/14\/the-bible-unity-reading-plan\/\">Bible Unity Reading Plan<\/a> recently read these words that God says to Pharaoh through Moses and Aaron: \u201cHow long will you refuse to humble yourself before me?\u201d (Exodus 10:3)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, that is God&#8217;s question to every man. You would think that we humans \u2013 weak, sinful creatures that we are \u2013 would easily humble ourselves before the One who fashioned the universe, before the One who is holy, holy, holy, before the One who offers us grace and mercy and eternal joy through Jesus Christ though we deserve His wrath. But not so. From the Garden of Eden until today, we humans have found humbling ourselves before God to be a great challenge.<\/p>\n<p>So as an encouragement to humble yourself, listen to these Scriptures. Let them dwell in you richly. He saves a humble people. Make sure you are among them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Psalm 18:25-27 (from this coming Sunday\u2019s sermon text): \u00a0\u00a0With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.\u00a0 For you save a <b>humble<\/b> people, but the haughty eyes you bring down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Psalm 25:8-14 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.\u00a0 <b>He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way<\/b>.\u00a0 All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.\u00a0 For your name&#8217;s sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great.\u00a0 Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.\u00a0 His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land.\u00a0 The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Psalm 147:5-11<b> <\/b>\u00a0Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.\u00a0 <b>The LORD lifts up the humble<\/b>; he casts the wicked to the ground.\u00a0 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre!\u00a0 He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills.\u00a0 He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry.\u00a0 His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,\u00a0 but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Psalm 149:3-4<b> <\/b>\u00a0Let [the children of Zion] praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!\u00a0 For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; <b>he adorns the humble with salvation.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Proverbs 3:33-34<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0The LORD&#8217;s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous.\u00a0 Toward the scorners he is scornful, but <b>to the humble he gives favor<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Proverbs 15:33<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and <b>humility comes before honor<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Proverbs 22:4<b> <\/b>\u00a0<b>The reward for humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honor and life<\/b>.<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Isaiah 66:1-2<b> <\/b>\u00a0Thus says the LORD: &#8220;Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest?\u00a0 All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But <b>this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Zephaniah 3:11-12<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;On that day you shall not be put to shame because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me; for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant ones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain.\u00a0 But <b>I will leave in your midst a people humble and lowly<\/b>. They shall seek refuge in the name of the LORD.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Luke 1:46-55 [<i>Mary is a model of humility for all of us<\/i>.]\u00a0 And Mary said, &#8220;My soul magnifies the Lord,\u00a0 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,\u00a0 for <b>he has looked on the humble estate of his servant<\/b>. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;\u00a0 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.\u00a0 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.\u00a0 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;\u00a0 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and <b>exalted those of humble estate<\/b>;\u00a0 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.&#8221;<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">John 13:3-5<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. <b>He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.\u00a0 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples&#8217; feet<\/b> and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Philippians 2:3<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but <b>in humility count others more significant than yourselves. <\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Colossians 3:12-17<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Put on then, as God&#8217;s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, <b>humility,<\/b> meekness, and patience,\u00a0 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.\u00a0 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.\u00a0 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.\u00a0 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.\u00a0 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ephesians 4:1-3<b> <\/b>\u00a0\u00a0I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,\u00a0 <b>with all humility and gentleness<\/b>, with patience, bearing with one another in love,\u00a0 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">James 4:4-10<b> <\/b>\u00a0You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.\u00a0 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, &#8220;He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us&#8221;?\u00a0 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, &#8220;<b>God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble<\/b>.&#8221;\u00a0 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.\u00a0 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.\u00a0 Be wretched and mourn and weep.
